About the department

The Department of English, established in 1979, has consistently upheld a tradition of academic excellence and intellectual engagement through its undergraduate programme, B.A. English. Recognizing the growing academic aspirations of students and the expanding scope of English Studies, the Department introduced the M.A. English programme in 2012. Over the decades, it has evolved in response to changing pedagogical trends, interdisciplinary approaches, and the broader demands of higher education.

The Department currently functions with a sanctioned strength of sixteen regular faculty positions, of which 4 are filled by regular faculty members, supported by nine Guest Lecturers. The faculty members possess diverse specializations across British Literature, American Literature, Indian Writing in English, Postcolonial Studies, Literary Theory and Criticism, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and English Language Teaching. Their academic contributions include presentations and publications in national and international conferences, seminars, and peer-reviewed journals of repute, reflecting sustained engagement with contemporary research and scholarship.

In addition to its teaching responsibilities, the Department actively fosters a vibrant research culture. Regular academic activities such as seminars, guest lectures, workshops, panel discussions, literary associations, and student-led forums further enrich the intellectual environment of the Department.

In 2019, the Department commenced admissions to the Ph.D. programme under the part-time mode, marking a significant milestone in its academic trajectory. Research scholars engage in diverse areas including literary theory, postcolonial studies, indigenous studies, gender discourse, cultural narratives, and English language pedagogy. Continuous efforts are being undertaken to enhance infrastructure, expand research output, strengthen collaborations, and fulfill the necessary criteria to establish the Department as a recognized full-time research centre for doctoral studies in English.

The Department also places emphasis on holistic student development by nurturing communication skills, critical thinking, ethical awareness, and social responsibility. Through curricular and co-curricular initiatives, students are encouraged to participate in debates, creative writing, theatre, literary competitions, and community-oriented programmes. Alumni of the Department have successfully pursued careers in academia, research, civil services, media, corporate sectors, content development, and education. With a commitment to academic rigor, inclusivity, innovation, and contextual relevance, the Department of English continues to strive toward excellence in teaching, research, and professional development, while contributing meaningfully to the intellectual and cultural life of the institution and the wider community.
